The Integration of Technology
into Modern Society

Part III

Looking from Within the Frame

To be conscious is, by its very nature, to look at reality from a single point of view. It is to experience the world from a subjective position. The way toward a more objective perspective begins with first recognizing this subjectivity, then framing it in order to understand it, and finally finding a way to step beyond that frame. Objectivity, in other words, is not something arrived at by avoiding subjectivity but something attained by passing through it once it has been recognized. Socrates's "All I know is that I know nothing" may sound at first like an act of humility, but it points to a much deeper awareness. Rather than confessing his ignorance, Socrates is saying that he has managed to take an objective position toward knowledge itself and toward his own capacity to know. To truly learn something is only possible in a mind willing to question what it thinks it already knows. For this reason, his statement marks the starting point of any consciousness capable of seeing the limits of its own thinking and being capable of recognizing its own subjectivity.

What was intuitively defined in ancient Greece two and a half thousand years ago is today addressed by neuroscience under a concrete name: metacognition, or higher-order cognition. Metacognition is the ability to observe one's own thought process and to recognize the boundaries of one's knowledge and ignorance turns what philosophy reached by intuition into a measurable cognitive skill. Processed in the frontal regions of the brain, this faculty allows a person to step one pace back from their own thinking; to examine their thoughts, beliefs, and judgments as if from the outside, as a detached observer. Because anyone who can observe their own thinking can also begin to notice the frame through which that thinking has taken shape. Thought frames become visible only when they are consciously observed. Someone who believes their own truths without ever questioning them cannot step outside the patterns those truths form; cannot break the perspectives that have hardened around them. This is why Socrates saying "I know nothing" is, in fact, a definition of the very precondition of learning and cognitive growth. To know what you do not know is the beginning of knowing.

A consciousness that can observe its own thought process through metacognition can also see that the thought itself exists through a frame; and only a consciousness capable of seeing the frame as a frame can begin to imagine that a reality might exist outside of it. At this point, metacognition stops being an abstract cognitive skill and becomes the very instrument that defines our relationship with the world we observe. A person who is aware of their frame still looks from a point of view — there is no way to make that point of view fully objective — but they can turn that point of view itself into an object of observation. Awareness of the frames one uses turns a person into an observer of phenomena; lack of that awareness turns them, without their knowing, into a builder of those phenomena. For someone who cannot see the frame they are using, the line between observing and shaping disappears; while they believe they are observing the world, they are in fact reshaping it within the categories that the frame offers. The person who is aware of their frame still looks from a single vantage, but because that vantage has become an object of observation, they can see what they are looking at and, at the same time, see how they are looking. This puts them in the position of an observer who can revise their own subjectivity — which is precisely why they remain aware of the line between observing and shaping. The unaware person, while thinking they are simply observing a phenomenon, is actually reproducing it within the categories supplied by their frame; they stop acknowledging any reality that lies outside that frame. In this case, the frame is no longer a tool one uses, but a ground that determines the very nature of one's questioning. Nietzsche's idea that there are no facts, only interpretations, describes exactly this process: reality does not exist in any solid, given form; it takes hold in us only as it passes through specific frames and assumes shape there at the level of perception.

To frame a phenomenon is at once necessary and dangerous. The frame makes the phenomenon intelligible, but at the same moment it bounds it, narrows it, and renders invisible whatever falls outside its edges. When a society uses the same frame for long enough and when, in other words, it walks by reading the same map, it forgets that the map is only a guide, that it can develop, that it can be redrawn. The lines stop being a tool of representation and start being taken for "the territory itself." Every map, no matter how reasonably drawn, is drawn from a particular position and with particular concerns; but its subjectivity is hard to see from inside it, while one is using it. A phenomenon, observed through a particular frame, is shaped in the very act of being observed. And the influences that go into the making and hardening of that map whether they act consciously or unconsciously become, in turn, the forces shaping knowledge on the society's behalf. What the society takes for "objectivity" ends up being a map drawn from a specific position, one that has long since forgotten where its own edges are.

For this reason, the fact that AI models have become the primary instrument through which modern society reaches knowledge means that the subjectivity inherent in the models' "understanding" of reality is transmitted directly to the user. A society's capacity to advance cognitively depends on its dependence on AI as a tool for accessing knowledge and more fundamentally on its ability to dismantle its own truths from time to time and reconstruct them anew. To accept, without question, both the information presented to a person and the frame that shapes that information weakens the cognitive strength of the human mind; this, in turn, can lead to a serious intellectual decline at the social level. As our capacity to evaluate phenomena outside the familiar disappears, it becomes easier to shape and control the ideas a society accepts. "Truths" that come to be perceived as unquestionable and unchangeable begin to take root. When we look at the history of science, we see again and again that what was once accepted as "true" was later overturned, and replaced by new truths.

The progress of science itself rests on this very foundation. Science is not the accumulation of absolute truths but is built on the testing of existing truths, their refutation, and when necessary complete abandonment of their existing truths. This process, what is called a paradigm shift. Paradigm shift explains how a reality taken to be unquestionable in one era can become entirely invalid in the next. What Galileo Galilei and Charles Darwin experienced in their own times are among the best-known examples. Galileo, for questioning whether the Earth was flat and for putting forward the new theory that it was not, was tried and sentenced to house arrest. Charles Darwin, for proposing that human beings had evolved from apes, met enormous resistance from religious institutions; he was ridiculed and rejected. Throughout history, examples of this kind have appeared again and again. What most clearly separates today from the past is the speed and strength with which information now travels through globalization, and the potential for a "mainstream" truth to be gathered into a single channel on a universal scale. In the past, the institution that tried Galileo was a local authority; the Anglican Church that rejected Darwin was the power of a particular geography and culture. An idea rejected in one place could continue to be debated in another; a truth closed off by one institution could still be opened by another. Resistance, however strong, was never alone. There was always an alternative ground. Today, even though the channels through which information flows have multiplied with the rise of social media, the centralization of what counts as institutionally "acceptable" or "valid" knowledge, when combined with AI, carries the potential to gather knowledge into a single point on a universal scale.

When such a center reaches sufficient power, it becomes an unquestionable institution. And what is unquestionable produces no development because progress can only happen through the testing, the refutation, and where necessary the abandonment of existing truths. A source that cannot be tested is a paradigm in the process of going blind. Today we can see many domains moving in this direction: from science communication to public health policy, from social values to economic models, closed institutions are forming in which "true" and "false" are separated by sharp lines, and where questioning itself before any space has even been opened for it, is treated as dangerous. The hardening of this line stems not from knowing what is true, but from establishing who holds the authority to say what is true. The expectation is that information is to be accepted rather than questioned, internalized and defended rather than examined from a distance. Within this chain, the individual is pulled into the position of a consumer of ready-made truths, with no need to exercise their own cognitive strength. Yet cognitive strength, like a muscle, weakens when it is not used. A mind that does not question, in time, becomes a mind that cannot question.

A society that has grown cognitively weak, when faced with difficulty, no longer finds its way through reasoning, debate, and the exchange of ideas; it begins instead to respond through conflict, polarization, and violence. Because a mind that cannot question cannot form its own view; it can only imitate other views by reinforcing them. This leads it to see the person across from it not as someone to argue with, but as an enemy of the truth. Once the culture of debate collapses, all that remains is the taking of sides.

This is why it matters that unusual perspectives, and approaches that fall outside the established patterns of the "normal," not be cast aside as outsiders. The perception that a society's "truths" cannot be questioned, or that questioning them is not even possible, must not be allowed to settle in. As that perception takes hold, truths can no longer be reexamined or developed. A structure closed to intellectual progress at the collective level emerges. Such a society, without realizing it, becomes ideologically uniform; it looks at reality from a single direction, with a rigid posture. And at this point, technology and artificial intelligence can turn into instruments that reinforce and direct this uniformity of thought becoming invisible but deeply rooted mechanisms of control over collective perception.

01

What is a “Frame”

The notion of a frame is the body of abstract agreements a society constructs within itself. As Jean-Jacques Rousseau argued in The Social Contract, a group of people who wish to live together must produce shared agreements that make this togetherness possible. These agreements give order to a society, structure the relationships between individuals, and provide a ground for the flow of daily life. When we take this notion, which Rousseau used in a political sense and when we carry it onto a wider plane, we begin to see that social contracts are not limited to forms of governance alone; they are, in fact, a far more fundamental instrument through which phenomena themselves are shaped.

Throughout history, the various tools societies have used to establish order have, in truth, functioned as frames for making sense of, shaping, and controlling the phenomena that exist by nature. Through these abstract agreements, social order has been built; individuals have been able to live alongside one another in compatible, predictable ways. These frames lay the very foundation upon which "facts" come into being. Much of what we count as "fact" is actually the result of multiple frames laid one on top of another. Take, for instance, the fact that someone named "Leyla" is twenty-six years old. This is true because Western civilization counts three hundred sixty-five days as a year, and one year as one year of age, and because roughly 365 × 26 days have passed since this person's birth. This frame is nearly universal but only because Western civilization adopted the Gregorian calendar. Had we used China's traditional calendar, the same person might have been a different age. Had we used the Maya calendar, the very concept of being "twenty-six years old" might not have existed. The sentence "Leyla is twenty-six years old" is not, then, a fact handed to us by nature; it is an agreement that emerges from multiple frames laid one over another. To give another example: the fact that we live in the year 2026 is something we treat as truth, unquestionable, given. And yet at this very moment, people in different parts of the same world live in completely different years, because they use completely different calendar frames. According to the Islamic calendar, we are in 1446; according to the Hebrew calendar, 5785; according to the Hindu Vikram Samvat calendar, 2081; according to the Buddhist calendar, 2568. Different beliefs, different religions, different convictions about systems of government, different moral norms each, in different societies, producing a different "reality."

Different religions construct different frames; different beliefs give rise to different patterns of behavior. What a society holds to be good or bad, sacred or sinful, just or wrong depends on the frame it lives within. The same act can be a virtue in one frame and a crime in another. The same day can carry the meaning of celebration in one culture and mourning in another. The same food is halal in one belief and haram in another.

02

What Is Categorical Thinking?

One form of thinking is what we might call categorical thinking: evaluating the same phenomenon through the frames offered by different disciplines, or by different fields of expertise. Each discipline brings its own terminology, its own methodology, and its own set of questions to the phenomenon it studies. This is what allows it to make sense of that phenomenon in its own particular way. Even when the same phenomenon is taken up by several disciplines at once, each discipline produces a different set of meanings, because each sees the phenomenon from within its own categorical plane. The phenomenon does not change; only the way it is given meaning does.

Let's make this concrete with an example. Take the laughter of a person. For a neuroscientist, this event is the contraction of facial muscles brought about by the movement of certain motor neurons in the brainstem. For an evolutionary biologist, it is a social-bonding mechanism inherited from our ancestors. For a psychologist, it can be an immediate emotional response. For a sociologist, it is a form of communication shaped by cultural codes where and when laughter is appropriate is something learned socially. For a scientist working at the strictly physiological level, laughter may be no more than a physiological event. For a philosopher, it stands as a symbol of the happiness one finds amid the difficulties of life, it could stand as a tool for coping with reality. For a theologian, perhaps it is a quality bestowed upon human beings by God. The same event passes through the hands of seven different disciplines and is given seven different meanings; it gives rise to seven different inferences. None of them is wrong, but none of them encompasses the whole.

Falling in love can be another good example. For a biochemist, it is a particular change in the levels of dopamine, oxytocin, and so on. For a neuroscientist, it is a neural activation tied to the brain's reward system. In fact, because of the drop in serotonin levels, brain patterns resembling those of obsessive-compulsive behavior emerge, so much so that some might even describe falling in love as "dangerous." For an evolutionary biologist, it is a mate-selection mechanism that secures the continuity of the species. For an anthropologist, it is a phenomenon defined entirely differently from one culture to another. For a poet, it is something that none of these definitions can fully meet a state that is nothing other than the experience itself. The same feeling, but each discipline turns it into a different reality.

A more tangible example: a glass of water. For a chemist, it is a mixture in which H₂O molecules come together in the liquid phase. For a physicist, the liquid inside the glass is a system possessing a particular surface tension, viscosity, and thermal capacity. For a biologist, it is the solvent indispensable to the metabolic processes of living cells. For an economist, it is a priced, distributed, traded resource. For an anthropologist, it is the symbol of a culture's relationship with water itself, for a Muslim, abdest; for a Hindu, the Ganges; for a Christian, baptism. For a poet, what the water inside the glass means is something else entirely. Water never fits into any single discipline's definition; because disciplines do not see water, they see a particular aspect of water.

This is something long discussed in the philosophy of science: no discipline, on its own, can encompass a phenomenon in its entirety. Each discipline brings a perspective to the phenomenon. What it sees within its own cross-section is real, measurable, testable but it is not the whole of the phenomenon. The physicist Werner Heisenberg expressed this in his own way: "What we observe is not nature itself, but nature exposed to our method of questioning." Each discipline puts its own questions to nature and records nature's answers to those questions as the truth. The phenomenon does not change, but when the questions differ, the answers differ along with them.

Each discipline speaks from within its own disciplinary frame; its "certainty" holds only within the limits of that frame. The equations that explain classical mechanics do not coincide with the equations that explain the atom. The findings of quantum physics cannot be fully accounted for by the discipline of classical mechanics. Both are physics, yet they evaluate the same phenomenon through different lenses, at different scales. Every frame is powerful within its own domain and carries a blindness outside of it. Disciplines, in other words, are like windows: each shows a particular part of nature and cannot speak to the rest. A cognitively mature stance is not to believe that any single window reveals the whole view, but to bring multiple windows side by side and approach the phenomenon through them. In the philosophy of science, this is called epistemic pluralism. It does not mean that everything is relative; it means that a phenomenon cannot be grasped from a single vantage, and that different perspectives must therefore be evaluated together. The phenomenon does not change; but to recognize that grasping it requires more than one frame is, in itself, a kind of philosophical maturity.

03

What Is a Paradigm Shift?

The progress of science itself rests on this very foundation. Science is not the accumulation of absolute truths; it is built on the testing of existing truths, their refutation, and when necessary their complete abandonment. The process that the philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn called a paradigm shift explains how a reality taken to be unquestionable in one era can become entirely invalid in the next. What Galileo Galilei and Charles Darwin lived through in their own times are among the best-known examples. Galileo, for defending the claim that the Earth revolved around the Sun, was tried by the Inquisition in 1633; charged with "vehement suspicion of heresy," he was forced to renounce his views and spent the remainder of his life under house arrest. A truth that today even primary-school children know that the Earth revolves around the Sun but it was held to be false by the institutional authority of its time; his book was banned, and remained banned for years.

When Darwin's On the Origin of Species was published, it was met with fierce rejection by religious institutions, ridiculed by its readers, and caricatured in the newspapers of the day with his face placed on the body of an ape. A theory that today stands at the foundation of modern biology was, in its own time, accused of being unscientific, even ridiculous. The fact that Galileo, Darwin, and countless others who defended a new discovery, a new idea, a new ideology or a new path in the world of science have been rejected over and over by societies and institutions throughout history reminds us that; no matter what era we live in, a portion of the "truths" we today take to be beyond questioning will, tomorrow, may be brought down. Because every era believes its own truths to be absolute; every institution sees its own paradigm as reality itself. And yet history shows that whatever appears absolute is, sooner or later, shaken. The authority that put Galileo on trial believed itself to be in the right; the society that rejected Darwin believed its own intuitions to be natural. We today are open to the same illusion: many of the "certain truths" that future generations will look back on with a quiet smile are standing all around us right now but they have settled into such an invisible ground for us that it is difficult even to see them as frames. Every scientific "truth" can only descend as far as our instruments of measurement allow; beyond that point, all that remains is the hypothetical. The trouble is that these hypotheses, once passed through institutional processes and presented to society, enter circulation as "certain truth" and acquire a position from which they cannot be questioned. Our instruments improve over time; but every improvement undoes the "certainties" of what came before and erects new ones in their place. Science, in other words, does not measure the whole of the universe; it measures only as much of it as our instruments can see at any given moment. And no matter how much our instruments may improve, no instrument capable of measuring the entire depth of the universe will ever be reached.

This is the true lesson of the paradigm shift: that institutions tend to sacrifice individual rightness in order to preserve their own paradigms. The collapse of a paradigm is not merely the change of a scientific idea; it is also the shaking of the institution that rests upon that paradigm of its authority, of its economic order, of its social hierarchy. This is why resistance is most often directed not at the truths of science, but at the structures those truths would bring down. The institution that stood against Galileo was holding on not to the immobility of the Earth, but to the idea that the Church's word on the world was the final word. The society that stood against Darwin was holding on not to the biological content of the theory of evolution, but to the belief that the human being is a privileged kind of being. When a paradigm changes, what is shaken is not only knowledge; it is the entire structure that carries that knowledge.

This is why the progress of science is not a straight line; each advance rises upon the ruins of the one before it and becomes, in turn, the ground upon which the next one stands. No scientific truth we accept today is exempt from the testing, the refutation, and where it is necessary the abandonment that the future will bring to it. To know this is not a kind of skepticism toward science; on the contrary, it is the deepest form of respect one can hold toward it. Because science is not an institution that knows the truth, but an institution that seeks it.

04

What Is Metacognition?

The word is built from two parts of Greek origin: meta meaning "above," "beyond" and cognition, meaning "knowing" or "the act of knowing." So metacognition is, literally, knowing about knowing, the cognition of cognition. The Turkish equivalent is üst biliş, sometimes also rendered as üst bilinç (higher consciousness) or biliş ötesi (beyond cognition).

Metacognition is "thinking about thinking." It is the capacity of a person to be aware of their own mental processes, and to observe, evaluate, and regulate them. In its simplest form, it is an individual's reflection upon their own thought process. It is the ability to observe one's own thoughts from a step behind, to recognize that one's own point of view is a point of view, to evaluate one's own ideas by seeing one's own subjectivity. In other words, it is used as a way of developing the way one thinks by noticing the invisible, partial gaze that lies behind what we call "understanding." It is a skill that is genuinely difficult, but one that, when achieved, accelerates cognitive growth at its very root. It sustains the continuity of neuroplasticity and opens the path to cognitive strength. A mind that can look at its own thinking from the outside becomes able to see its own patterns. As it begins to see those patterns, it can begin to change them; as it changes them, it can begin to flex. Metacognition is not, in the strict sense, "being objective" nor can it be. However aware a person becomes of their own partial point of view, of their own thinking, they still know that they are looking from a single vantage. This very awareness opens up the capacity to revise that vantage. A person who has not developed metacognition: sees the phenomenon (as they imagine it to be). A person who is developing metacognition: sees the phenomenon, and at the same time sees how they are seeing it. This second position is not objectivity itself; it is a step taken in the direction of objectivity.

05

What Is Superintelligence, or AGI?

AGI meaning, Artificial General Intelligence refers to a hypothetical artificial intelligence model capable of performing every cognitive task a human being can perform: a system that can transfer knowledge from one domain to another, that possesses a very high capacity for pattern recognition, and that can adapt itself to new and unfamiliar situations. A system, in other words, that can link different disciplines to one another. The reason "hypothetical" appears here is that AGI does not yet exist. The large language models we use today like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini are able to work across very wide domains, but they still fall under the category of narrow AI. Their capacity for genuine "generalization" remains limited; they cannot autonomously carry knowledge from one domain into an entirely different one, nor can they set new goals for themselves. The long-term aim that AI companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and DeepMind have openly declared is AGI but the when it will be reached is a matter of debate. Some researchers say it can be reached within five to ten years and others say it will take decades, or even centuries. Others believe that true AGI can never be achieved with the architectures currently in use.

Superintelligence is the step beyond AGI. While AGI describes a system that has been brought level with human intelligence, superintelligence describes a system that has surpassed human intelligence in nearly every cognitive domain from scientific creativity to social skill, from problem-solving to strategic thought. The research surrounding it points to the possibility of a consciousness that could answer the existential questions human beings themselves have never been able to answer. The relationship between the two concepts can be put this way: AGI is a threshold, and superintelligence is what lies beyond that threshold. There is no superintelligence without first an AGI.

Topluma Girişi

III.

Her biri, farklı toplumlarda farklı "gerçeklikler" üretir.

Farklı dinler farklı çerçeveler oluşturur; farklı inanışlar farklı davranış kalıplarını ortaya çıkarır. Bir toplumun neyi iyi neyi kötü, neyi kutsal, neyi günah, neyi adalet, neyi yanlış saydığı; hangi çerçevenin içinde yaşadığına bağlıdır. Aynı eylem bir çerçevede erdem, başka bir çerçevede suç olabilir. Aynı gün bir kültürde kutlama, başkasında yas anlamı taşıyabilir. Aynı yiyecek bir inanışta helal, diğerinde haramdır.

02

Buna bilim felsefesinde epistemolojik çoğulculuk (epistemic pluralism) denir.
